At Tiger Stadium, the Detroit faithful were treated to an intriguing pitcher's
duel. Earl Wilson(3-5) finally bested his Chicago counterpart, Tommy
John(4-3), by the score of 3 to 1.
Detroit took the lead off John in the first inning with 2 runs using 3 hits.
Mickey Stanley kicked off the action when he lofted a solo-blast 'downtown'
(his 9th of the season). Dick McAuliffe stepped up next and he laced a
base-knock. Al Kaline then drew a walk. Norm Cash stepped in and he lined a
single scoring the final run of the inning. That was all Wilson needed.
Detroit ended up with 11 hits for the game while Chicago had 8.
Don McMahon was credited with his 3rd save. John was given the loss. He
allowed 10 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings.
