Larry Dierker pitched a complete game as the Houston Astros defeated the New
York Mets by the score of 4 to 2 at Shea Stadium.

New York fell behind quickly as the Houston offense came through in the first
inning as they scored 2 runs on 2 base hits. The highlight belonged to Jim
Wynn who deflated the crowd as he bombed a two-run dinger (his 7th of the
season). Houston had only 6 hits for the afternoon.

The victory went to Dierker(6-2) who went the distance allowing 2 runs. The
losing pitcher was Don Cardwell(2-4). He allowed 4 runs and 5 hits in 7
innings.

The Los Angeles Dodgers sent down 26 year old pitcher Bobby Darwin and recalled 26 year old pitcher John Purdin.

Darwin was 0-0 with a 17.18 ERA in 3 2/3 innings pitched. The Dodgers are thinking about moving him to the outfield in the minor leagues because he has a very good bat and has been unsuccessful in two stints at the major league level.

Purdin, a three year Dodger veteran, was up briefly earlier in the year. He pitched one inning not giving up a run and will be reinstated to the Dodger bullpen.

The Boston Red Sox defeated the California Angels by a score of 6 to 3 at
Anaheim Stadium.

Boston went ahead for good in the 2nd inning when they tallied 2 runs on 1
hit. The key at-bat was by Rico Petrocelli who deflated the spirits of the
home town crowd when he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run
(his 8th of the season). Boston and California each finished the afternoon
with 7 hits.

The win was credited to Sonny Siebert(5-2) who went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing
3 runs. Sparky Lyle earned his 3rd save. The loss was charged to Rudy
May(0-5).
