Larry Dierker pitched a complete game as the Houston Astros defeated the New
York Mets by the score of 4 to 2 at Shea Stadium.
New York fell behind quickly as the Houston offense came through in the first
inning as they scored 2 runs on 2 base hits. The highlight belonged to Jim
Wynn who deflated the crowd as he bombed a two-run dinger (his 7th of the
season). Houston had only 6 hits for the afternoon.
The victory went to Dierker(6-2) who went the distance allowing 2 runs. The
losing pitcher was Don Cardwell(2-4). He allowed 4 runs and 5 hits in 7
innings.
